What Text Counter Measures
This tool counts words, characters with spaces, characters without spaces, sentences, and paragraphs in any text you paste. Words are counted by splitting on whitespace. Sentences are counted by detecting full stops, exclamation marks, and question marks followed by a space or end of text. Paragraphs are counted as blocks of text separated by blank lines. Each metric serves a different purpose depending on whether you are writing for a platform with word limits, character limits, or just tracking content length.
Character Limits on Social Media and Platforms
Different platforms impose different limits. Twitter and X allow 280 characters per post for standard accounts. LinkedIn posts can be up to 3,000 characters. Instagram captions support up to 2,200 characters, though only the first 125 show before the 'more' cutoff. Meta descriptions for SEO should ideally be 150 to 160 characters. SMS messages are 160 characters per segment, with longer messages split into multiple segments. Knowing your character count before posting helps you stay within limits.
Word Count Guidelines for Content
Different types of content have different optimal lengths. Blog posts intended for SEO typically perform best at 1,500 to 2,500 words. Detailed guides and pillar pages can exceed 5,000 words. Email newsletters perform well at 200 to 500 words. Press releases are typically 400 to 600 words. Academic essays are assigned a specific word count. Using a word counter helps you hit targets accurately rather than guessing, which is especially important when editors or clients specify a word limit.
Reading Time Estimation
The tool also estimates reading time based on an average reading speed of 238 words per minute, which is the research-backed average for adult silent reading. This estimate is useful for blog posts and articles where showing a reading time at the top of the page helps readers decide whether to engage. Keep in mind that content with dense technical information, code snippets, or complex arguments will take longer to read than the estimate suggests, as readers slow down for comprehension.
